Housing Support Services

Am I Homeless?

You are homeless or at risk of homelessness if:

  • You have been evicted, or forced to leave the place where you have been staying
  • You are sleeping rough, like in your car, a park or in a tent
  • You can’t afford to pay your rent or mortgage and you’re getting into debt
  • You are staying with friends and family for short periods of time
  • You are unsafe in your current situation but have nowhere else to go. For example, you are escaping domestic violence

In some cases, people who are homeless can be granted temporary accommodation through Housing NSW. To access this service enquire in person at the Housing NSW offices at 29 Molesworth Street, Lismore or phone 1300 468 746 (until 4.30pm) or 1800 152 152 (after 4.30pm, weekends and public holidays).

Northern Rivers Housing Support Service provides housing support in Lismore, Richmond Valley, Kyogle and Ballina Shires to help homeless people find their way off the streets and establish social connections back into their community.

The Housing Support Service provides case management support to people aged 18 years and over who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Youth Housing Support provides support to young people aged 16 to 24 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness and living in the Ballina Shire.

For the past five years, we have provided a welcoming place where homeless people can come and talk to staff about the problems that are affecting their ability to access a home for themselves and their families.

We assist people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to identify their strengths and enable them to develop strategies to address issues that are impacting on their lives such as; addictions, mental health, budgeting, relationships and health.

Through partnerships with community housing services, public housing and real estate agencies our case managers within the Housing Support Service advocate for clients and identify affordable housing options in a very difficult climate of economic stress and limited housing stock.

By providing holistic case management, we provide information and advice, develop collaborative relationships with other services, and support and advocate for people in need.
